Morphological abnormality in thornback ray Raja clavata in the Irish Sea

چکیده
Abstract A free-swimming thornback ray Raja clavata specimen demonstrating significant morphological abnormality is reported, captured by beam trawl in the Irish Sea off north Wales, UK. The anterior sections of both pectoral fins were separated from head section for a length approximately 140 mm extending rostrum tip to point posterior spiracles, along with abnormal morphology gill slits. This phenomenon has been observed elsewhere but first documented example this eastern Sea, despite widespread targeting species across region commercial and recreational fishers. Possible causes consequences are discussed.

Multiple paternity analysis in the thornback ray Raja clavata L.
Skates (Rajidae) are characterized by slow growth rate, low fecundity, and late maturity and are thus considered to be vulnerable to exploitation. Although understanding mating systems and behavior are important for long-term conservation and fisheries management, this aspect of life history is poorly understood in skates. Using 5 highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, we analyzed egg clutches...
متن کاملEarly life sensory ability-ventilatory responses of thornback ray embryos (Raja clavata) to predator-type electric fields.
Predator avoidance is fundamental for survival and it can be particularly challenging for prey animals if physical movement away from a predatory threat is restricted. Many sharks and rays begin life within an egg capsule that is attached to the sea bed. The vulnerability of this sedentary life stage is exacerbated in skates (Rajidae) as the compulsory ventilatory activity of embryos makes them...
متن کاملPhylogeography and population structure of thornback rays (Raja clavata L., Rajidae).
The phylogeography of thornback rays (Raja clavata) was assessed from European waters, using five nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial cytochome b sequences. Strong regional differentiation was found between the Mediterranean basin, the Azores and the European continental shelf. Allelic and haplotype diversities were high in Portuguese populations, consistent with the existence of a re...
متن کاملAdvanced Spatial Modeling to Inform Management of Data-Poor Juvenile and Adult Female Rays
Chronic overfishing has depleted numerous elasmobranch stocks in the North East Atlantic, but addressing this issue has been hampered by management complications and lacking data. Spatial management approaches have thus been advocated. This work presents a novel application and further development of an advanced spatial modeling technique to identify candidate nursery grounds and spawning areas...
